Mount Olympus, Greece's highest peak, was revered in classical times as the home of the gods.
After 2000 BC, Hellenic invaders introduced the Indo-European sky-god Zeus who became the supreme god of classical Greece.
The Mother Cult was absorbed into what became the pantheon of Greek gods. Under the name of Hera (the Lady) the Mother goddess became the consort of Zeus. She was divided into Aphrodite, goddess of love; Artemis, virgin huntress, a goddess of wild nature; Athene, goddess of war and also of wisdom and crafts; and Demeter, the corn goddess.
Other Olympic gods include Poseidon, god of the sea, Hethaestus, the smith god, Apollo, patron of the arts and medicine, Ares, god of war, and Hermes, messenger between gods and men.
